Used Alpine cars overview

Alpine has been going since the 1950s, when it was founded by racing driver Jean Rédélé. It became famous in the seventies for winning the first World Rally Championship with the tiny, gorgeous, original A110 sports car, and then went on to win at Le Mans, with engines and cash from Renault, which bought Alpine outright in 1973.

Alpine’s sports cars continued in production, with Renault V6 engines, into the early 1990s, but then the brand was back-burnered. Renault revived it in 2017 with a new A110 — bigger and more practical than before, but still just as gorgeous as ever. It became a modest hit, taking on the Porsche Cayman, and it’s still popular today as Renault starts to build Alpine into an all-electric brand.

The A110 makes a great purchase as they don’t depreciate much, but there are plenty of reports of mechanical maladies, especially in the seven-speed paddle-shift gearbox, and in the car’s myriad electronic systems, so buy carefully.

Alpine’s latest model, the all-electric A290, based on the new Renault 5 EV, could be a better used bet once those start to filter through to the second hand market.

FAQs

Sort of. Alpine’s A110 sports car is beautiful to look and spectacularly good to drive, but it can be fragile on the reliability front, and they’re never cheap, so you need to shop carefully. An all-electric A290 hot hatch might be a better used buy but they will be thin on the ground for a while yet.

You absolutely should because the Alpine A110 is one of the best-driving cars on sale right now, and a true classic amid sports cars. Just go into it with your eyes open on the reliability and maintenance front.
